The Athletics alternate logo history is all about "the white elephant". It was "born" in 1901, the first year of the A's. Then-A's owner/manager Connie Mack had been one of the key components in the birth of the American League that year. John McGraw, the owner of the New York Giants, referred to the A's as the "White Elephants," citing that Mack shouldn't be allowed to spend money without supervision. In an act of defiance, Mack adopted the elephant insignia for his team".
